As you may already know, I am a huge Evernote fan. I have posted about it a number of times and it has even been the topic of an entire episode of our MinistryGeek This Week podcast. But one of the most overlooked features of Evernote is the ability to email stuff into your Evernote account.

Evernote provides you with a custom email address when you sign up for an account (either free or paid). You can find your Evernote email address in the Settings section of your account information online. It is not the easiest email address to remember, but once you save it in your address book or in Outlook it should be easy to use. Any emails (with or without attachments) that I want to add to my notebooks simply get forwarded to this unique Evernote email address. Within minutes they are available in my account. This works great for storing PDFs that have been mailed to you or if you have a Premium account you can send any type of file into your account for storage.

Use the @ and # symbols to place emailed notes exactly where you want them.

One thing many people don’t know is that you have a great deal of control over where in your Evernote notebook your email lands. Here is how:

In the subject line of the email type the title of the note as you want it to appear in Evernote.

After the name, type the name of the notebook where you want the email information filed with an @ symbol in front of it (i.e. @inbox, @mainnotebook, etc…) If you specify a notebook name that is not in your account the note will be placed in your default notebook.

You can also add tags into the subject line by adding the # symbol in front of the tag (i.e., #travel, #itinerary). I have note found a way to add more than one tag per email as of yet.

Give this a try and you will save yourself the need to refile notes after you have added them to Evernote.

Yes, I am the MinistryGeek, and I am joined in this show by two good friends, Dale Jenkins and Caleb O’Hara. Dale is the co-host of the popular podcast, iPreach and Caleb is co-host of the podcast, Engage! (both podcasts have been mentioned here before). This is a project I have wanted to do for a long, long time, but one that I just never got around to. Dale and Caleb actually approached me with the idea and so I finally did it. I also, need to repay thank Caleb for the logo he developed for the show. This is again proof that you need to be careful what pictures you post on Facebook!

What is MinistryGeek This Week all about?
This podcast will be about Technology in Ministry (big surprise huh?). We will post a new episode each week on Wednesday mornings and we we deal with a number of different topics related to using technology in various aspects on ministry. In some ways this new podcast will be an extension of this blog and what I teach in my Ministry Technologies course at the Bear Valley Bible Institute of Denver. Dale, Caleb, and I all love the Lord and we love finding new ways to use technology to spread the message of the Gospel and build up the body of the church. We hope you will join us.

Listen or download our first episode here. In the next few days this should be available through iTunes on your computer and we hope you will subscribe to it and listen when you can.

Let us know what’s on your mind
If you would like to comment on the show, or ask us a question, email it to MinistryGeek@edge.net. We look forward to hearing from you.

A preacher friend of mine mentioned that if you get me talking about technology and ministry for more than about 10 minutes I will end up mentioning both. This post isn’t going to change that trend. If you have an iPhone or and iPod touch you need to get the FREE Logos Bible app. You don’t have to own the desktop version of Logos to use the iPhone app, but if you do you can access more books from your library on your phone. The details you can get from this iPhone app are amazing. Press your finger on a footnote to see the references, hold your finger on a word to see the Greek or Hebrew word it is connected with. Do in depth word studies and passage guides linking you to commentaries and other resources right on your phone or iPod.

The free app comes with access to 31 books:

Instapaper has been around for awhile now. I must admit that I just discovered it recently, but it has already helped me tremendously. If you are at all like me, you often find articles online that you really want to read, but you don’t have time at that moment to read them. In the past, I would bookmark it to come back too later, but alas the link would get lost in my maze of bookmarks. I played with Delicious and even Google Bookmarks a bit, but it didn’t really seem to help me. Enter Instapaper. First, you sign up (easy process) for a free Instapaper account. Instapaper provides a “Read Later” bookmarklet (a small link that goes in your bookmark bar at the top of your browser) to let you store articles for reading later. When you find an article online that you want to read, but you don’t have time at the moment simply click the “Read Later” bookmarklet and the article is added to your account. If you use Google Reader as your blog reader, you can add a “Send To Instapaper” link in your Reader so you can send the article directly into your Instapaper account.

Once the articles are in your account, Instapaper’s power really kicks in. You can read these articles online later, read them on your iPhone, download them as PDF files, or even download them to your Kindle if you have one. As an iPhone user, now I can read these articles whenever I have free time. The iPhone app (free or Pro version $4.99) presents the text of the article in a very readable style even on a small screen. The Pro version offers some great features including Dark Mode for low light situations (the screen presents the text as white of black), tilt scrolling (simply tilt your iPhone and the text scrolls as you read), folders, star articles you’d recommend and it even saves your position in the document so you can pick up right where you left off later. Now, I can catch up on my reading while standing in line at the bank, while eating my lunch (without getting food all over my laptop keyboard) or any other time I have a few free minutes.

Check out the Instapaper video below and start reading those articles you want to read, when you have time to read them.

Ok, I know…it has been awhile between posts again. The main reason for this has been my schedule. I am teaching much ore now and also trying to get ready for another trip to Tanzania! I am very excited about that and look forward to sharing information (and photos) from the trip when I get back.

A second reason that my posts have not been flowing freely lately is that I find the Blogger editor lacking. It does everything fine, but it just isn’t convenient (can you say spoiled user here). For this post I am using a new desktop blog editor, Blogo. I am just using this tool for the first time, but I must say it is very easy to get up and running. I have been using MarsEdit, which I like overall, but I have a very hard time with graphics uploading to my posts with it. There seems to be a problem with Blogger and MarsEdit concerning graphics that I cannot seem to fix. Blogo seems to have no such issues. One feature that I really like about Blogo is the preview of my post. When you select preview it shows you how the post will look within your blog. It grabs a template from your blog and shows you EXACTLY how your post will look once posted. Other packages may do that, but MarEdit didn’t.

The graphic of the Blogo logo was captured with Skitch. I have to say that I love this tool. Skitch is a screen grab tool, but I must say it is the easiest one I have used. One of the features in Skitch that I am really drawn to is the ability to scale you screen grab before you save it. After you capture the section of the screen that you want to capture you simple drag the size of the window to get the graphic to the desired size. The dimensions of the graphic are listed in the bottom corner of the window and are updated dynamically while you drag the window size. This makes it very easy to get the graphic the size you want right from the get go. Skitch also comes with a web account to store your captures online for easy retrieval. I LOVE THIS APP! It is in beta right now and so the price is right….FREE! I must say however, I have tried to use a number of screen grab programs and Skitch beats them all for ease of use and working the way I need it to.

Sadly, both Blogo and Skitch are for MAC only, so PC users are out of luck. Both of these programs are excellent additions for anyone blogging from a MAC. I am a much happier blogger using them!
